Equipment Needs for the Climb

Each individual participating in the Climb for Clean Air must have the

items listed below. Do not jeopardize your safety and comfort -- bring every item!

Whittaker Mountaineering offers a 30% discount on all rentals for all training hikes, Climb School and summit climbs:

  • pack
  • climbing boots
  • crampons
  • ice axe
  • ski poles
  • helmet, rope, harness (on summit climbs only)

You provide:

  • backpack (unless you rent one)
  • *sleeping bag rated to freezing (32oF)
  • *wool, pile or fleece pants
  • *parka (down or synthetic)
  • 2 wool, pile or fleece sweaters
  • polypro or other synthetic long johns
  • polypro or other synthetic undershirt
  • *2 pairs wool, pile or fleece gloves
  • one pair waterproof & windproof overmittens
  • 2 pairs wool or synthetic socks
  • eating utensils (one spoon is fine)
  • plastic bowl and mug
  • wool or synthetic stocking cap
  • *gaiters
  • waterproof and wind proof jacket (with hood) and pants
  • sun cream and lip balm
  • *glacier glasses with side protection
  • *headlamp with extra batteries
  • 2 trail lunches
  • Food for dinner and breakfast at Camp Muir on the ascent
  • 3 1-quart water bottles (with water)
  • plastic garbage bag
  • duct tape (can be wrapped around water bottle)
  • * Available for rent at Whittaker Mountaineering.

Optional gear you may bring, but is not required:

  • hiking shorts
  • t-shirt(s)
  • sun hat
  • bandannas
  • foam ear plugs
  • ski goggles (recommended for contact lens wearers)
  • camera
